Jennifer Haigh was elected on the IOM3 Hong Kong Branch Council in 2016 and has since made a great contribution to the Council and promoting IOM3 in Hong Kong and beyond, through organising site visits in Hong Kong and Shenzhen in China, speakers for webinars, hosting webinars and seminars, judging the Hong Kong YPLC final and promoting IOM3 to her French company.
She was a great asset both on the organising committee and a session facilitator at the IOM3 150th Anniversary seminar in 2019. She is also part of the organising committee for the upcoming International Seminar to be held in Hong Kong this November.
In 2020 she was elected as the first female Honorary Secretary of the Council for the 2020-2022 Term and in 2022 was elected as the first female President of the IOM3 Hong Kong Branch Council for the 2022-2024 term! In addition, in 2022 she was elected onto the Women in Materials, Minerals & Mining ommittee as the international representative to further promote IOM3 to a wider international audience.

Dr Stanton has made significant contributions to the development of the Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) subject at the University College Dublin (UCD), where he served as Head of School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering (since 2018) and Head of Subject for MSE (since 2013) with responsibility for the strategic development of the subject area at UCD. He was the founding Programme Director for two MSE Masters programmes: ME and MEngSc. Additionally, he has led accreditation by both IOM3 (2013, 2017, 2018) and Engineers Ireland (2013, 2018), resulting in the ME MSE being the only double-accredited Engineering programme at UCD and the only IOM3-accredited programme in the Republic of Ireland.
Moreover, Dr Stanton's service to IOM3 extends beyond his work at UCD. He served as a member of the IOM3 Local Affairs Committee from 2001 to 2004 and as a member of the Local Affairs Board from 2005 to 2016 and regularly travelled to London for meetings of these groups. He was Chair and Secretary of the IOM3 Southern Ireland Region from 2001 to 2004 and in 2008 was a founder of the Materials Ireland Society affiliated with the IOM3 where he served as IOM3 Liaison Officer (2008-2010) and Vice-Chair (2010-2016). He chaired the prestigious final of the then-named Young Persons' Lecture Competition UK final at the Armourer's and Brazier's Hall in London in 2002 and 2003, and was a judge for the 2004 Young Persons' World Lecture Competition final. In Ireland, he helped to organise many YPLC heats and finals in collaboration with other institutions both sides of the border. His PhD students Kevin Doherty won the IOM3 Young Person's Lecture Competition World Final in 2015, Kevin Roche won the Irish Final in 2012, and Kevin O'Flynn won the Irish Final in 2009: the latter two attended the respective finals in Hong Kong and South Africa.

In January 2022 during Martin’s final Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Steering Group Meeting for his then employer COWI, he reported on the success of piloting Accessibility Passports for neurodivergent and disabled employees and presented on the advantages and disadvantages of introducing the concept of Employee Resource Groups and discussed the submitted Terms of Reference and Action Plan for an ERG. Both these inclusive initiatives for staff retention and to foster a diverse workforce were instigated by him. By February 2022, Martin joined Knight Piésold Limited (KP) as a UK based Senior Mining Geotechnical Engineer and now works for the multidisciplinary niche consultancy on international projects from their concept to closure. Throughout, Martin continued in his lay role as a geotechnical EDI Advocate since 2013.
He is a thought-led leader who demonstrates conscious inclusion to one and all, challenges the status quo, promotes awareness, shares knowledge and acceptance of those are neurodivergent and disabled in the workplace and society. He aims to empower others by making our profession accessible and welcoming and does this by being an active role model and proactive ally. Whilst working for KP, Martin continued to mentor junior staff towards Chartership and one former team member and to support their chartered engineer journey via IOM3.
During 2022, he delivered eight EDI talks to numerous groups including internally to his KP colleagues, the British Geotechnical Association Young Member’s Group, other external organisations (Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions, HS2’s Ability Affinity Network, Waterman Aspen Apprentice Forum), the Institute of Directors (Yorkshire and North East branch) and at EDI In Geoscience 2022. He speaks with passion, knowledge intertwined with humility and his lived experience on subjects ranging from Neurodiversity and Resilience, Being Visually Impaired: General Eye-wareness, How to nurture neurodiversity at work and why it matters, and Changing Mindsets. Martin frequently blogs insightfully on LinkedIn to promote aspects of his story, raise awareness of EDI issues and underrepresented groups and to encourage geotechnical engineering to become a truly inclusive, diverse and equal profession. In 2022, topics have included: Privilege and Intersectionality, Avoiding Assumptions About Disability, To Tell or Not To Share?, Myth Busting Neurodiversity and Being Authentic With Others.
Whilst promoting EDI issues in 2022, he wrote one article, and co-wrote another, both in Ground Engineering magazine. He also wrote Embedding EDI into a Professional Engineer’s Lifestyle for the Engineering Professors Council’s Ethics Toolkit. Martin was heard on four podcasts promoting acceptance and in engineering there is a place for everyone to thrive in their chosen specialty. In 2022, he was interviewed on: Autistic Conversations with David Crisp, Behind the Scenes with Bryan Ulrich, Breaking Ground with Steve Hadley and Diverse Minds with Leyla Okhai. In addition, he was also recognised as a national Role Model In GeoScience by the University of Huddersfield, interviewed as part of the University of the West of England’s neurodiversity in engineering research programme and gave an technical presentation to inspire the next generation of undergraduates from Exeter University.

Dave Evetts has a long and distinguished track record with the East Midlands Materials Society (EMMS). He joined EMMS around 1998, was President from 1999 to 2006 and has been Honorary Secretary ever since. During Dave’s presidency, in 2002 EMMS changed name from East Midlands Metallurgical Society to East Midlands Materials Society and in 2004 merged with the East Midlands Polymer Group. Additionally, he currently acts as Chair for the Local Affairs Committee, and under the old governance system, was a member of Council, hence a Trustee and enthusiastic and regular contributor to Council debates.
EMMS would not be the local society it is without Dave’s leadership, dedication and commitment. We were Local Society of the Year in 2013 and 2019, have run several successful technical conferences and held countless technical meetings on a huge range of subjects across the materials cycle. During my time as President, it has been an absolute privilege to work with Dave and his commitment shows no signs of diminishing.
His enthusiasm and professionalism drive us to deliver a full, highly successful and varied technical programme. However, a key attribute that characterises Dave’s approach is his passion in supporting and developing students and younger members. This takes many forms, e.g., encouraging participation in the Younger Persons’ Lecture Competition (on Dave’s suggestion, EMMS sponsors the YPLC final), provision of student travel grants to attend international conferences, payment of IOM3 membership fees and networking opportunities at our events. Dave has an inclusive nature and at society meetings will take the time to introduce himself to newcomers, welcoming them to the event and telling them more about the society’s activities.

Keith was the Chairman of the Institute of Packaging National Council in 1996/97 and 2005/06 and in 1997 was appointed a Fellow of the Institute of Packaging. He then served as a trustee of the Institute of Packaging until its merger with the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining in 2006. Keith was also the Chair of The Packaging Society created through the merger of the Institute of Packaging (IOP) with the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), and represented Packaging on the IOM3 Industry and Technology Policy Board. In addition, he is a member of the Sustainability Development, Energy Materials and the Surface Technologies Groups. In 2006 he was awarded Chartered Scientist status (CSci) and subsequently Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) within IOM3. He is an accredited packaging professional (APkgPrf) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) as well.
Following the merger of the IOP with IOM3 in 2006, Keith has been a valued member of the Midlands Packaging Society (MPkgS) committee. During that time, he has organised many talks and visits run by the Midlands Packaging Society. He has also been instrumental in making sure that the Pack to the Future conference run by the MPkgS since 2011 is the great success it has been and continues to be. For 4 years Keith acted as a judge for the annual Institute’s Starpack awards. He has coordinated a Packaging summer school in the UK for Michigan State University School of Packaging, USA for 17 years. This has allowed many young people from the USA to learn about and appreciate the dynamism of the UK packaging industry and, of course, their schedule includes the Pack to the Future conference.
Keith is a regular communicator of his thoughts and views on circularity in the packaging industry. He regularly shares these thoughts with his followers on Linked In and in the industry media. He regularly posts blogs on the current situation of the packaging industry.

Professor Todd is an international authority in the field of Additive Manufacture (AM). Funded by industry, charitable foundations, and government his group of 15 engineers develop solutions to bridge the divide between manufacturing technology and materials science at a scale that enables direct industrial involvement and facilitates transition from lab to application. His work on both enhancing the manufacturing rate of AM and improving component quality has had significant industrial and academic impact for the use of AM as a manufacturing method. His research impacted industry from Aerospace to Fusion Engineering, science (through over 160 highly cited engineering journal publications), education (through supervising over 80 PhD students and Post Docs), and public engagement.
He is a pioneer and world-leader in additive manufacturing, powder processing, and materials engineering; his research within the EPSRC Hub on Manufacturing using Advanced Powder Processes (MAPP) into the application of live- active - monitoring and control of the AM process enables us to precisely control resultant structure and properties in AM in a way not previously possible. He is particularly well known for his research activity related to Electron Beam powder bed AM having worked extensively with Arcam (now GE Additive), Freemelt, and Wayland in supporting the development of Electron Beam AM technologies and their application to the manufacture of critical components for aerospace. Here, Proffesor Todd worked with Rolls-Royce to optimise the manufacture by AM of an aeroengine front bearing housing and GKN to drive industrialization of AM.
The focus on developing and transitioning novel manufacturing technologies to industrial use has been a defining characteristic of his approach to research since the beginning. As a new lecturer, supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) he built research capability in Powder Based Net Shape Manufacture first at the AMRC, then as a centre of Innovative Materials and Manufacturing and then MAPP, all at the University of Sheffield. He and his team have helped regional SMEs compete for, and win, contracts in excess of £7M, create new supply chains and safeguard or create over 150 high value jobs. He has also worked with industry and the High Value Manufacturing Catapult Centres to develop UK capacity in AM and, becoming, in 2015, the RAEng/GKN Aerospace Chair in Additive Manufacture and Advanced Structural Metallics.
His experience spans academic teaching and research, engineering consultancy to FTSE100 companies and industrial research. He sits on the Science and steering boards or AM centres in Sweden and Spain and has authored over 160 papers, holds 4 patents, runs an international AM conference (the Alloys for Additive Manufacturing Symposium) and regularly delivers plenary, keynote and invited lectures at international conferences. He is proactive in developing and training young engineers; he leads and mentors a large group at Sheffield, delivers courses, workshops and seminars worldwide and is a member of the IOM3 Accreditation and Professional Development Committee.

Robert McMeeking is a world-leading Scientist in the field of the Mechanics of Materials. He has made seminal contributions ranging from finite strain plasticity theory and its computational implementation within finite element codes to the coupling of solid mechanics and other physics in order to address a wide range of problems in engineering science. His work bridges modern solid mechanics to materials science and irreversible thermodynamics, with immediate application to the ductile fracture of alloys by void growth, to cleavage fracture by hydrogen embrittlement and to the failure of dielectrics, ferroelectrics and Li ion batteries. His papers have enjoyed a long-lasting impact due to his ability to select problems of enduring significance. For example, the sintering of engineering materials now underpins the theory of additive manufacture, and his theoretical framework on interfacial fracture underpins the modern-day design of multi-layers under thermo-mechanical loading, such as silicon chips with 3D interconnects and ceramic composite parts in the next generation of gas turbines (of direct significance to GE, Siemens and Rolls-Royce).
He is a major force on the world stage of mechanics. He has mentored many eminent mechanics researchers, and he continues to work closely with UK researchers at the Universities of Aberdeen and Cambridge. He has been recognised internationally for his many contributions (for example, FREng, US National Academy of Engineering) along with the 2 premier mechanics prizes (ASME Timoshenko medal and the Prager medal). He remains very active and is a selfless member of the community; he has served as Editor-in-chief of the Journal of Applied Mechanics, and is currently President of the International Congress on Fracture.
Robert McMeeking has made highly original and influential contributions on a wide range of topics within the overall field of Micromechanics: the relationship between microstructure, performance and failure of engineering materials across the length scales and time scales. By combining new theoretical and computational insights he has explained the microstructural basis for a wide range of important phenomena, ranging from the ductile fracture and hydrogen embrittlement of metallic alloys to actuating materials such as ferroelectrics and dielectrics. He has inspired a whole new generation of mechanics researchers in Engineering and Materials Science both in the US and in the UK.

Dr Lewis Owen is a Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) Research Fellow whose highly novel work explores local structural phenomena in alloy systems. Through the creation of methodologies for the analysis of short-range order and local lattice strains using total scattering, Dr Owen has pioneered an innovative tool for understanding local effects in metallurgical systems of engineering interest. The insights provided by Dr Owen’s work are vital for elucidating the local-structure-property links, that have eluded metallurgists for many years. Through his work, he has helped renew interest in studies of the nature of metallic solid solutions, and has expanded the field of materials to which the total scattering technique can be applied.
Of particular note are his investigations into local structural distortions and the highly-distorted lattice hypothesis in the High-Entropy alloy field. His internationally recognised work on this topic has challenged one of the core founding principles of the field. His outstanding work has already been recognised with a number of invited talks at national and international conferences, and invited papers on the topic. Additionally, for his work he has been awarded the Malvern PANalytical Thesis Prize in Physical Crystallography, and two highly prestigious research fellowships; from Gonville and Caius College, and the Royal Academy of Engineering. His RAEng fellowship focuses on the exploration of local structure in compositionally complex materials for atomic energy applications.
Beyond his work, Dr Owen is also a significant contributor to the academic environment. He works closely with UK national facilities such as the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source and the Diamond light source, as an expert on scattering experiments for the study of alloy materials, serving on access panels at both institutes. He is an active member of the community, serving on committees of the British Crystallographic Association and Institute of Physics, and formally IOM3.
Additionally, he is incredibly committed and extensively involved in outreach activities, having worked on numerous projects including presentations at the Royal Society Summer Exhibition, Science Festivals, the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, and Harwell open days. He continues to deliver outreach talks at schools regularly, actively participating in encouraging people to study materials science and working on projects targeting widening participation in STEM from underrepresented groups, particularly based on socio-economic background. For his work, he has recently been awarded the Parkin Prize and lecture for excellence in outreach and education in crystallography.
Further in his role as co-lead of the XRD materials X-ray facilities he has implemented a number of initiatives to inspire and energise users, growing the interest and awareness of applications of diffraction. Externally he also acted as the lead organiser for PCG Intensive Summer School in Physical Crystallography – bringing together early career researchers from across the UK and Europe for a week-long intensive course held in Oxfordshire. In his activities he has shown himself to be an excellent role model, inspiring early career researchers and those considering an education and career in science.

Professor Saiful Islam has made, and continues to make, outstanding and sustained contributions to outreach activities and science communication at all levels, and in particular for young audiences (11-19-year olds). His work highlights the excitement associated with work in the energy materials field, and he discusses the science with clarity, enthusiasm and humour. Examples of some of the highlights of this work include presenting the 80th anniversary Royal Institution Christmas Lectures in 2016 for BBC TV, numerous Education in Action and schools talks with the innovative use of 3D glasses, setting and regaining the Guinness World Record for the highest voltage lemon battery for a Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) outreach video and receipt of seven awards since 2008 (Royal Society, ACS, RSC) including the RSC Materials Chemistry Lecturer award for schools talks and outreach.
Considering the outreach activities that Saiful has developed, it is perhaps pertinent to consider their impact in the wider community, and it is apparent that the Christmas Lectures have incredible national and international reach, with over 3.8 million viewers, leading to follow-up lectures in both Singapore and Japan. His outreach work in the area of energy has also led to inclusion in the RSC COP26 activities, with 140,000 views of his Guinness world record attempt. It is evident that Saiful is an engaging public speaker, and is able to address audiences at all levels, and generate enthusiasm for the chemical and physical sciences. His achievements are recognised through his work on the RSC public engagement committee, and it is clear that Saiful is a passionate and talented science communicator. In my view Saiful Islam would be a worthy recipient of the Robert Perrin Award, acknowledging his sustained contribution to widening participation and increasing diversity in the sciences.
Saiful obtained his PhD from University College London under Sir Richard Catlow, FRS, followed by a Research Fellowship at the Eastman Kodak Labs, New York, USA. He joined the Materials Department of the University of Oxford in 2022 as Professor of Materials Modelling after 16 years at the University of Bath. His work is focussed on computational materials science and its application in the area of energy materials, in particular with recent focus on understanding transport properties in battery materials.

Since starting at the Royal Hospital School back in September 2018 Beverly has been proactive as developing and promoting the teaching and learning materials, design and STEM at the school and across the local region. From her first year at RHS Beverly has been pioneering in the way design, materials and technology is taught at RHS. She introduced the use of concrete and epoxy resin as casting materials to the department; these were first implemented into the GCSE curriculum and through Beverly training these are now used in our lower school curriculum as well. She has also made the department rethink how students should work in a workshop; students are now taught how to use a range of machinery and tools and once trained they are encouraged to ‘experiment’ with materials in the workshop to test out processes and the work properties of this materials. This has had a positive impact on students engagement in the subject and the uptake at GCSE and A-level.
She has also been the driving focus in setting up the department recycling space. She has creating a curriculum which get students from Y7 to Y13 to reprocess plastics into new usable material which they can use in their project. This has started small, and is now running with two shredders and a large heat press.
As well as a classroom teacher Beverly is also the STEM lead at RHS. IN this role she has promote STEM again all subjects. This starts with the introduction of a number of STEM competition to students are the school.
