Wood is one of those materials that we see and use everyday without giving it a second thought.  But what is behind this versatile material?  Jim Coulson of the IOM3 Wood Technology Society (WTS) has created a short film to explain wood in simple terms for primary aged children.  The clip uses drinking straws to demonstrate how and why the properties of wood vary across and along the grain.

You can see the clip and access lots of other useful and interesting information about wood, aimed at older pupils, on the WTS microsite.
