What to expect
As the steel sector intensifies its efforts to decarbonise and demonstrate broader sustainability performance, the term ‘green steel’ is becoming increasingly prominent across industry, policy and finance. Yet, it continues to encompass a wide range of definitions and measurement rules. This leads, at best, to inconsistencies and, at worst, to a breakdown in trust. In a global and highly-traded industry, this lack of alignment can weaken confidence in sustainability claims, complicate procurement decisions and create barriers to investment.
In this talk, Annie Heaton, CEO of ResponsibleSteel, will share the story of ResponsibleSteel as an independent, multi-stakeholder standard system aiming to create a trusted framework for defining, assessing and stimulating responsible steel production. Drawing on the development and implementation of ResponsibleSteel’s International Production Standard, the presentation will examine how common reference points can support comparability, transparency and credibility across diverse geographies and production routes. It will also consider the role of certification and third-party assurance in strengthening the credibility of claims, not only in relation to greenhouse gas emissions but across the full spectrum of environmental, social and governance issues.
Looking ahead, Annie will reflect on the rapidly evolving landscape in which steelmakers are operating, characterised by expanding and yet disjointed policy interventions, the emergence of multiple regional frameworks for low-emission steel, and the hesitancy of transition finance to support first movers. She will outline ResponsibleSteel’s response to this increasing complexity and fragmentation through the concept of interoperability between standards and frameworks as a practical means of enabling alignment, demand and ultimately trade in steel that depends on a more consistent interpretation of sustainability claims across borders.
