What to expect
As a "hard-to-abate" sector, the transition of the steel sector faces significant challenges in the global transition to net-zero and relies on a complex mix of technologies depending on the geographical location of each company and the availability of the technology and necessary resources. However, the technical shift is only half the battle. This presentation explores the "harder-to-account" dimension: the fragmented landscape of emissions reporting and boundary definitions that currently complicates the tracking of progress across international supply chains. The fragmented landscape of emissions reporting complicates tracking progress, leading to risks of carbon leakage, perceived ‘greenwashing’ and a general lack of clarity surrounding divergent metrics.
The steel industry is seen as a strategic industry for many nations, including the UK. Policies and reporting frameworks can influence the decisions being taken by the industry so it is vital that the existing and emerging frameworks for embodied carbon measurement are aligned both at a national and global level, to ensure that at least this part of the playing field is level. The World Steel Association’s 30+ year long expertise in this area, and its global overview of these approaches helps the industry and its stakeholders to understand the differences between different reporting standards, the need for different approaches and those areas where reporting standards can be brought closer together. This can then be used to help navigate the regulatory and voluntary reporting pressures being faced by steel companies in the UK and around the world.
