The UK Steel Strategy

  • In 2024, the UK government declared its intent to develop a Strategy for the UK Steel Sector. This strategy, backed by £2.5bn of investment, added to the £500m already committed to the redevelopment of Tata Steel Port Talbot. A Steel Council was duly convened, co-chaired by the Secretary of State for Business and Trade and an independent industry advisor, Jon Bolton. Membership was drawn from devolved governments, trade unions and industry.

  • The goal of the committee was to oversee the development of a Strategy that would act as the basis for an investment case for the UK Steel Sector.

The strategy was published in March of 2026 and covers the projected demand for steel products, a review of the technology requirements to achieve environmental and economic objectives, the required skills and technical support and, crucially, policy requirements related to energy, procurement and trade.

This lecture will cover the content of the strategy and outline the case for investment.
