Fellow (FIMMM)

Fellow or Fellowship, FIMMM, is the Institute's most prestigious grade and is recognition for those who have made a significant contribution or established a record of achievement in the materials, minerals, mining fields or another technical discipline covered by the Institute. Application for Fellow is open to both existing members and those not already in membership.

The Fellow grade can be applied for as a standalone grade or with Competent Person Registration (CPR) from the Engineering Council (as a CEng, IEng or EngTech); the Science Council (as a CSci, RSci or RSciTech); or with the Society for the Environment (as a CEnv). If CPR is also being sought, the applicant will need to satsify the academic, expereince, competency and Institute requirements for the level of registration.

Understanding the requirements and the process

Potential applicants should consult the Guide to FIMMM, which explains the Routes to Fellowship, the application process and the documentation that needs to be submitted when making an application. It can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

Making an application

Membership Application Form
All applicants are required to submit a completed application form in addition to the documentation detailed in the guide.

The type of application form that needs to be completed will depend on whether the applicant is already a member of IOM3 or not, and if they also wish to apply concurrently for professional registration. Further details are given in the guide and each of the forms can be downloaded from this page.

Referee support
Applications must be supported by two referees who should normally be FIMMM or Fellow of a different professional body, and have known the applicant for at least 2 years.

You can download the appropriate application form and referee pro forma at the bottom of this page.

'Become a Fellow' workshops

The Institute offers a mentoring workshop for those interested in applying for Fellowship. These are normally held at Institute offices in the UK, but the Institute is happy to provide groups of members with sessions at their place of work or other venues. The Institute will however be holding these virtually for the forseeable future.

Our future programme is:

24 April 2020

15 May 2020

29 May 2020

12 June 2020

This workshop gives attendees a better understanding of their suitability for Fellowship and the requirements for qualification, in addition to guiding them draft the major part of their application.

If you would like to attend a workshop or have any questions about the application process, please contact us by email on membership@iom3.org or by using our online enquiry form. You can also speak to us by telephone on +44 (0)1476 515761.
