John Park Signs Off
This is John Park signing off after three years in the WTS Chair.
Handing over to Graham Ormondroyd following my three-year stint brings the return of academia to The Wood Technology Society Chair for the first time in twenty years and with that change will come the benefits of a ‘new broom’ and new ideas, different approaches but still with the ever-present pressures which come with the necessity of maintaining and growing membership.
For me, it has been an interesting three years – not least because of the additional Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining commitments associated with the position of Chair of an IOM3-affiliated society – during which we have made a degree of progress: our ‘Talking Timber’ articles are a regular feature in TTJ and which I will continue to ‘manage’ for the foreseeable future; the burgeoning WTS web site is updated and added to regularly; company supporters, as members of the IOM3 Industry Affiliate Scheme, are now highlighted on and individual details accessible directly from the WTS homepage and with ‘Timber 2018’ in June we reintroduced a scientific wood conference into the UK annual events calendar.
You can see what the WTS is all about by trawling the web site. What isn’t clear is that what we achieve is driven by volunteers. We have also ensured that much of the web site is free-to-view because our activities are aimed at a much wider audience than WTS members alone – take a look at the IOM3 Schools Affiliate Scheme web pages as therein lies wood’s future!
