Jim Coulson CEnv FIMMM

Jim Coulson is a past President of the Institute of Wood Science (2002-2004) and has been a member of the Board of the Wood Technology Society since its inception. He is the WTS Representative on  both the IOM3 Constuction Materials Group and IOM3 Sustainable Development Group.  He was recently awarded CEnv.

Jim founded the consultancy practice Technology For Timber in 1991: and he is currently Director of the practice, which these days trades under the title of TFT Woodexperts Limited.  Based in a suite of offices on the outskirts of the Cathedral City of Ripon in the Yorkshire Dales, TFT Woodexperts offers worldwide consultancy services in Education & Training in Wood Science and Timber Technology; site investigations and problem solving in timber and wood-based products; installation of  quality systems in wood- product manufacture; as well as new product certification, through its registered Diamond Mark Quality Scheme. TFT Woodexperts also offers - through another trading title, TFT Global (www.tft-global.com) - contact, design and marketing services to overseas producers of wood products, who wish to enhance their profile in the UK.

In 2012 Jim's book "Wood in construction: how to avoid costly mistakes" was published by Wiley-Blackwell; and in 2014 his second book was issued by the same publisher, entitled: "Sustainable use of wood in construction".

Jim is also one of the UK's top setters of extraordinarily difficult cryptic crosswords, in the Times Listener and Sunday Telegraph Enigmatic Variations series (under the pseudonym of Jago); and he also now sets the monthly thematic crossword puzzle in the IOM3's magazine Materials World (under the pseudonym of Anobium - ie, "Woodworm"). He also has represented the North of England Team on the world's longest-running quiz show, Round Britain Quiz, which broadcasts each autumn for a 12-week run on BBC Radio 4.
