11 Jun 2013 - 13 Jun 2013
Sheffield

The BSSA and SMEA are working together on the Harry Brearley Centenary
Conference and Exhibition entitled 'The Development and Application of
Stainless Steels'.

The event is a part of The Centenary of Stainless Steel programme of events that are been organised in Sheffield in 2013.

Harry Brearley was responsible for the research department at the Brown Firth Laboratories. Whilst working on alloy steels fot the manufacture of gun barrels in October 2012, he made a series of steels varying in chromium content from 6 to 15  percent and  found that low carbon steels with above 12 percent chromium did not corrode. It was on 20th August 2013 that he made the first arc furnace cast of stainless steel.
