IOM3 appoints new Chair of the Professional Standards & Development Board

Trustees of the Institute are pleased to appoint Dr David Stewart CEng FIMMM as a Trustee and the next Chair of the Professional Standards & Development Board (PSDB).

Speaking about the appointment, David said ‘As Chair of PSDB I would us like to continue to focus on a number of areas in order to ensure the health and vitality of the Institute. We must make sure we uphold the IOM3 values and our licence activities; we must also look at how we grow and diversify our membership.

As part of this we should regularly review if and how we can enhance the value of membership of IOM3 at all levels to both our current and potential new members. I would also like us to look at how we need and are able to evolve our support to our members and their development given the challenges and opportunities that we all face now and in the coming years, and I look forward to chairing those discussions and seeing what we can achieve.’

David graduated from the University of Nottingham in materials and chemistry, and then undertook a post graduate study on the wear behaviour of thermally sprayed nanoscale tungsten carbide – cobalt coatings. In his career to date, he has worked in the civil nuclear and civil aerospace industries, including manufacturing and in-service support, and since 2007 in the defence sector.

As well as continuing his surface engineering activities, David also works in the field of powder metallurgy, specifically the use of ferrous and nickel-based powder HIP technologies for the nuclear sector. As a Fellow of IOM3 and a Chartered Engineer, he continues to mentor and support applicants.
