Peter Haslehurst was a longstanding member of IOM3, but his association with the Institute’s community embraced the activities of the former Iron and Steel Institute and the Institute of Metals. An active supporter of the merger between the Institute of Materials and the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy to create IOM3, he was also fully involved as Chairman of the IOM3 Audit Committee, during the planning and finalisation of other IOM3 mergers and the broadening of the institute's membership within the period of 2002 to 2010. In his capacity as Audit Chair he bought insightful leadership to IOM3 governance and was a valued sounding board for the operations team in the development of new ideas.
A CEO and Chairman in international manufacturing PLCs for 48 years, including 100 companies in 30 countries, he specialised in mentoring and assisting management in the restructuring of non-performing companies, restoring them into successful enterprises. He was involved in metallurgy, chemicals, fluid technology, aircraft and defence. As Chairman and Chief Executive of Brunner Mond, the UK’s biggest producer of alkaline heavy chemicals, and Chairman of Luxfer Holdings following that, his career ran well into his later years. He often recounted his favourite memories of working with innovative engineering businesses in the 80s and 90s as Chairman and Chief Executive of EIS Group and Flexibox International. During this long and successful career, he generated tens of thousands of jobs.
He was made Eisenhower Fellow from Britain in 1980 and an honorary Doctor of Science at Loughborough University in 2008. An honorary chief of the Maasai Tribe and a Freeman of the City of London, Peter lived a varied and full life.
The dearly loved husband of the late Susan Marilyn Heath Haslehurst, a much-loved father of Thomas and stepfather of Matthew and Adam, Peter was a titan of his time and is remembered with affection and admiration by all who knew him.
