Implications for materials of electrification and circular economics at Riversimple

Riversimple's Purpose is 'To pursue, systematically, the elimination of the environmental impact of personal transport'. As well as a shift in technology from mechanical to electric platforms, this leads to a completely circular strategy, gradually decoupling economic utility and revenue from virgin material consumption, turning sustainability from a cost into a source of competitive advantage. This business model has a profound impact on technology development, not just in the design of the car but also in material requirements and therefore the direction of materials research. This talk will explain the business model, its implications for materials and discuss a few examples.
Hugo Spowers is the founder and MD of Riversimple Movement, which he set up in 2001 after a career as a motorsport engineer, on the basis that a step change in automotive technology is both essential and possible. Riversimple is a sustainable car company, developing lightweight hydrogen fuel cell cars and the strategies necessary for bringing them to market. Riversimple's Mobility as a Service model makes efficiency and sustainability profitable and eliminates the economic barriers to bringing low carbon cars to market. The company is currently raising funds to establish its first plant for volume production in mid-Wales.
