Manufacture of Single Crystal Turbine Blades and the Advanced Blade Casting Facility; Tuesday 5th February

Sheffield Metallurgical and Engineering Association

31 Jan 2013
The evening lecture will be given by Dr George Durrant who is responsible for technical aspects of single crystal turbine blades at both RR Derby and the new state of the art facility underconstruction at the Advanced Manufacturing Park.

The Rotherham plant will be focused on the production of High and Intermediate Pressure Turbine Blade Castings for large Civil Trent Engines. There are over 65 single crystal turbine blades in every Trent engine.  One blade extracts around 1000 horsepower from the gas flow  towards the rear of the engine to drive the engine’s compressors.

The 14,000 m2 facility will be one of the most advanced blade casting facilities in the world, featuring groundbreaking manufacturing techniques such as 3D structured light for geometry inspection.  Construction is progressing well and the first components will be delivered in 2014. The plant will be capable of manufacturing 100,000 blades per year.

The event is to be held at the Holiday Inn, Royal Victoria – Sheffield.
Coffee and Biscuits at 5.30 - Presentation at 6.00.
                        Non- Members are most welcome.
