Tata Steel advances electric steelmaking plans
The company has signed contracts to aid its transition to electric arc furnaces (EAF) at Port Talbot.

The partnership forms a £1.25bln investment into a 1.8Mt pickling line. This is alongside £500mln of UK Government support into the Welsh site.
The contract was signed by Clecim – which designs and supplies mechanical and process equipment, and ABB – which delivers electrification and automation technology.
The new pickle line will process hot-rolled coils to eliminate oxide scale formed during the steel rolling process, ensuring a clean surface for further processing and enhancing the bonding of coatings and finishes.
Tata Steel CEO Rajesh Nair says the line will ‘form a major part of our green steelmaking facility at Port Talbot’.
The assembly is expected to employ 250 locals.
