Prysmian is manufacturing and installing the cables for the project, using 100% recycled copper from La Farga Yourcoppersolutions.

The 505km, 2GW project is a joint venture by National Grid Electricity Transmission and SSEN Transmission.

Prysmian says it is the first high-voltage direct current cable that will use completely recycled copper, supported by an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) from La Farga, ensuring full traceability of the recycled material in the cables.

The EPD guarantees that 10,000t of recycled copper are entirely contained with n the supplied rod, unlike a mass balance approach, where it cannot be certified.

Purchasing of the recycled copper is enabled by the Sustainability Innovation Fund, awarded to the EGL2 project by Ofgem.

The company says the project will avoid 56,675t of CO2eq emissions compared to using primary copper, leading to a 13% reduction in the overall carbon footprint of Prysmian's activities for the project.
