US recognises helium as critical material
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has assessed helium’s role in manufacturing and susceptibility to supply chain risk.
The DOE believes it meets the statutory definition of a critical material.
They have designated it as a critical material under the Energy Act of 2020.
The United States Geological Survey last updated their list in November 2025, adding 10 new minerals including boron, copper, lead, metallurgical coal, phosphate, potash, rhenium, silicon, silver and uranium.
