Design Innovation in Plastics 2012 finalists announced

Preliminary judging in the Design Innovation in Plastics 2012 competition "Universal Design: Designing for the Rest of Us" is now finished and congratulations to all 92 entrants.

The level of entries was high, but after much deliberation, the judges managed to narrow the field down to just six finalists.

These students will now have the opportunity to turn their ideas into reality before 25 May 2012, when they will present them to the judges at a final judging panel in London.

Below are the six finalists:

LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY
Rowan Williams, Industrial Design & Technology Year 4

Pego, a kitchen aid free of the visual aesthetics of current disability products that provides grip and stability in food preparation.

NORTHUMBRIA UNIVERSITY
Oliver Brunt, Design for Industry Year 2

Sense See Remember, an organisational memory aid based on a series of adhesive textured and coloured tabs to use as prompts in place of electronic devices.

NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY
Danny Lynch, Furniture & Product Design Year 2

Clean-Cut, a tool to help those with visual or physical impairments to construct and cut sandwiches.

NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY
Jamie Mansfield, Furniture & Product Design Year 2

Flexible Flat-Pack Clothing Hanger, a clothes hanger with flexible arms that collapse and spring back allowing the user to attach clothing via the neck without taking the hanger from rail or undoing buttons.

UNIVERSITY OF BRADFORD
Gediminas Kuprys, BSc Product Design Year 2

Floor Mouse, a foot-operated computer mouse with additional options for using the foot control with a keyboard, or with a mouse and keyboard.

UNIVERSITY FOR THE CREATIVE ARTS ROCHESTER
Michal Mojduszka, Product Design Year 2

Plug Pull Adaptor, a simple strip attachment that makes using and removing plugs very much easier for everyone. Simplifies the job of locating the right plug and promotes independence of the visually-impaired as braille can be moulded into the strips.
