The UK Fireball Alliance and the Fall and Recovery of the Winchcombe Meteorite
Add to calOnline and in person at Neville Hall. Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne.
The 4th Annual Joint NEIMME - Geological Society of London Lecture.
There are over 60,000 meteorites in worldwide collections but only know where a handful came from in the Solar System. Come find out how the UK Fireball Alliance (UKFAll), a collaboration between the UK's meteor camera networks, is working to recover meteorites by calculating their orbits and flight paths, and how the network recently helped to recover the first UK meteorite fall in 30 years: The Winchcombe meteorite.
We will also have the replica cast of the Middlesbrough Meteorite on display, which fell 140-years ago this year and was initially analysed in Newcastle by an Honorary Fellow of our Institute (Prof Alexander Stewart Herschel) within our very own Institute building.
