The 18th Annual Victor Philips Memorial Lecture MINING IS ESSENTIAL AND THE WORLD NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT IT!

The speaker is Mr Tim Biggs, former Head of Mining, Deloitte
Mining is essential! We use the products of mining for everything, every day. In fact it is reasonable to say that mining is the world’s most important industry after agriculture, and even modern agriculture couldn’t function without metals. The sustainability agenda, and particularly the energy transition, makes mining even more essential.
Unfortunately mining also has an image problem. There is, in broader society, a widespread lack of understanding, indeed often a misunderstanding, about the essential nature of mining. There is little appreciation for its complexity, its difficulties and its challenges, and there is almost no appreciation for the part mining plays in enabling sustainability.
We need to change this. The industry needs the support and understanding of society so miners can most effectively get on with the task of developing and running mines and producing all the metals the world needs. We also need to ensure an accurate understanding of mining if we are to attract the next generation of mining professionals to this most essential of industries.
