First UK production of lithium carbonate for electric vehicles

Lithium carbonate has been successfully produced from two UK sources – one from Cornish Lithium’s Trelavour project site in Cornwall and another from Scotland. High-purity lithium carbonate is a raw material for lithium-ion battery cells, such as those used in electric vehicles.

Could the Brazilian dam collapse have been predicted with satellite radar imaging?

One of Brazil’s worst environmental disasters - a dam collapse that also killed more than 200 people - could have been foreseen with the right monitoring technology, according to a new study by the University of Nottingham and Durham University, UK. The high-profile catastrophe took place on 25 January 2019 at a tailings dam near the Córrego do Feijão iron ore mine, close to the town of Brumadinho, in the Minas Gerais state in south-east Brazil.

My hope is that the Earth Science Board and community can work together to provide more technical and mentoring support to geologists actively working in the mining and related industries – create more engagement between the mining industry, IOM3, other professional institutions and school and university earth science teachers, lecturers and departments – and promote and improve the public perception of mining and geology.
