The Applied Earth Science Group provides a forum for the exchange of knowledge, information and best practice and networking for professionals involved in the location and responsible identification and use of the earth's resources. The aim is to provide people with the ability to find ways and methods to efficiently extract the resources needed by society on the path to net-zero with minimal impact on the landscape and environment.

Andy Birtles is a Mining Engineer, Professional Engineer and a Chartered Engineer and has specialised in the coal mining sector since 1979 and in the metalliferous and heavy minerals sector since 1999. He has worked on coal mining operations both in the UK and South Africa in various levels of operational management. Subsequently he spent time with various international mining consulting groups, and is currently a Director of ANB Mining Ltd.
Currently he is active in doing work assessing business interruption and material risk on mining operations.

Mark Campodonic is a Corporate Consultant (Resource Geology) and a Practice Leader of SRK UK, with over twenty years of international experience in mineral exploration, resource estimation and project development. Mark specialises in the authoring and auditing of resource estimates in accordance and compliance with International Reporting Codes, for independent assessments and as part of multi-disciplinary technical studies, auditing mining operations as part of Competent Person’s Reports and Stock Exchange Listings, and technical reviews.  In addition, Mark has a comprehensive understanding of project development and technical requirements from junior exploration companies at grassroots exploration level, through to the listing of majors, and actively manages exploration programmes, project evaluations/valuations, provides operational and governance support, due diligence reviews and feasibility studies. Mark has worked on base metals, precious-metals, bulk commodities (bauxite and iron ore), diamond and industrial mineral projects throughout Europe, Africa, Middle-East, Russia, the CIS, Asia and the Americas.

A Chartered geologist with over 17 years’ experience in the resources sector. Claire graduated from the University of Southampton with a First Class Masters in 2007 and joined AIM-listed Stratex International shortly thereafter, where she spent the next 11 years. During her career, Claire has operated at both the technical and commercial level, with a particular focus on gold exploration in Africa and Turkey.

Claire was promoted to VP in July 2018 as part of the restructuring of the Company to Oriole Resources PLC and then to Executive Director in July 2021. Claire oversees the Group’s exploration programmes and is heavily involved in the review and interpretation of technical data, as well as co-managing the Company’s corporate development activities.
