UK Government announces Great British Grid
The new publicly owned body aims to accelerate delivery of critical electric network infrastructure.
Sitting within Great British Energy, the Great British Grid will bring together public and private investment in the UK electricity grid.
It will accelerate competitive tendering of transmission projects, allowing a wider range of organisations to compete to deliver new network infrastructure.
The government will also bring forward reforms to expand self-build connections, allowing developers and businesses to build their own connections.
‘We strongly support the Prime Minister’s ambition to bring Britain’s energy costs into line with other European countries within 10 years, and his commitment to a long-term national energy plan and faster rollout of homegrown renewables to achieve that,’ says RenewableUK’s CEO Tara Singh.
The Great British Grid will complement, rather than replace, existing institutions responsible in Britain’s energy system and the role of existing network operators remains unchanged.
Ofgem remains the independent economic regulator responsible for regulating the energy market and network companies, protecting consumers and ensuring value for money.
The National Energy System Operator (NESO) remains responsible for operating, planning and coordinating the electricity system.
