Swedish technology firm Semcom is to partner with Norweigan company Hystar to develop new electrolyser technology for hydrogen gas production.

It is hoped the new technology will produce over 150% more hydrogen has compared to current electrolyser techniques while using less energy and cutting back on costs.

“The electrolyser technology we’re developing together will allow Hystar to produce highly energy-efficient electrolyser stacks, with the potential to reduce the capital cost of electrolysis by up to 60%. This is something that the world really needs”, explains Tommy Ekman, Technical Lead and Project Manager at Semcon.

The aim of the project is to develop a new generation of electrolysers that contain new design concepts for components, in order to potentially scale-up production depending on needs.

The project aligns with the EU strategy for hydrogen gas that identifies renewable, green hydrogen gas as crucial to achieving the European Green Deal – one of the European Commission’s six priorities between 2019 and 2024.
