Safer BPA-free coatings investigated in response to regulatory review
A European project aims to develop four coatings systems to reduce the presence of endocrine disruptors.
FAKOLITH, a specialist in coatings for surfaces in direct and indirect contact with food, beverages and drinking water, heads up the project. It is supported by AIMPLAS, the Plastics Technology Centre in Spain, which provides legislative and risk assessment expertise.
The project’s aim is to develop four high-performance, sustainable and safe coating systems that serve multiple purposes. They must be able to reduce endocrine disruptor migration to undetectable levels (<1 ppb) or eliminate it entirely, while also maintaining the functionality required by industries that are currently dependent on bisphenol-based resins and additives such as epoxy coatings.
The project collaborators say they have started with no fewer than 80 raw materials. At least 60 are expected to meet the requirements for direct food contact and are also functional for the new coating systems.
