Rolls-Royce SMR to build reactors in Sweden
Videberg Kraft selected Rolls-Royce SMR to build Sweden's first new nuclear power plant in more than 40 years.
The Videberg Project is hoped to significantly strengthen the Swedish energy system by adding 1,500MWe of clean baseload capacity – around 6% of Sweden’s annual power consumption – for more than 60 years.
This should support industries and households in southern Sweden while enhancing energy security.
The UK Government says the decision marks a clear endorsement of the credibility of small modular reactors. And follows the decision by Great British Energy – Nuclear in June 2025 to select Rolls-Royce SMR as its preferred technology partner for the government’s own SMR programme.
The Rolls-Royce SMR is in the final stages of the UK regulatory process and the first unit in Sweden is expected to enter operation in the mid-2030s.
