Call for Input: Environmental Audit Committee inquiry on Climate Adaptation
Respond to the IOM3 call for input by 7 October.
The UK Parliament’s Environmental Audit Committee has launched a new inquiry exploring the risks posed by climate change to communities, infrastructure, nature and the economy in the UK. The Committee will explore whether the UK’s adaptation system is fit to cope with extreme weather conditions and will seek to identify actions to improve national resilience to such events.
IOM3 is seeking insights from our members on the significance of materials, minerals and mining to these issues. We welcome contributions from across sectors, including insights from industry, academia and the wider professional community.
Key questions forwarded in the inquiry include:
- Are the UK's energy, water, transport, communications and health systems adequately prepared for more frequent extreme weather?
- What are the greatest vulnerabilities within critical national infrastructure, supply chains and essential services?
- What needs to be done to ensure current and future buildings, private and public, are adequately adapted to the changing climate?
- How might poorly planned climate adaptation create new vulnerabilities?
- What needs to be reflected in the next National Adaptation Programme to sufficiently deliver climate resilience?
- What lessons should be drawn from recent extreme weather, including heatwaves, drought, flooding and wildfires?
- Is current public investment in climate adaptation sufficient?
