Reusable ready meal packaging system targets closed-loop catering
A European consortium aims to develop packaging capable of withstanding at least 40 use cycles.
The ReLoop project involves AUSOLAN, AWAYTER, ITC Packaging and AIMPLAS, who are working together to integrate the automatic dispensing of prepared food with the return, cleaning and reuse of containers.
The system aims to reduce the carbon footprint of packaging by 90-95% compared with single-use alternatives.
A key objective is to develop packaging capable of withstanding at least 40 use cycles, while maintaining food contact safety, functionality and an appearance acceptable to the consumer.
The consortium is researching materials that can tolerate repeated washing and drying processes without compromising packaging quality, and that can be recycled at end of life.
The project will also develop a ‘24-hour digital canteen’ system, which will allow users to book meals, make contactless payments and return containers for wash and reuse. Each container will be traceable, enabling the system to monitor its lifespan and number of reuse cycles.
The intention is that ReLoop’s design for a circular model will address the technological, logistical and business model challenges necessary to ensure its technical and economic viability.
