Portugal exits coal

Portugal has closed its last remaining coal fired power plant, nine years ahead of a 2030 deadline.

On 20 November the Pego plant exhausted its stock and stopped generating. The site was responsible for approximately 4% or the country’s CO2 emissions.

The country is, however, still relying on imported fossil fuels for over 30% of its overall energy needs.
