In our latest member benefits, we look at the range of awards and scholarships and bursaries available from IOM3.

Premier and Personal Achievement Awards

IOM3 presents a range of Awards, Medals and Prizes to recognise personal achievement, for published work and for contributions to the profession. Awards are presented at special occasions throughout the year, and some of our award winners deliver lectures to which all members are invited. Nominations for most of our awards are invited in the autumn.

Education and Publication Awards

The Institute has several awards specifically for graduates of materials courses. Nominations for these awards are made by university
materials departments.

The Royal Charter, A T Green and R H Craven Awards are given to students graduating from UK accredited materials courses for their outstanding performance, together with other qualities and achievements which suggest a promising professional career.

The Institute also recognises our technician members and makes two awards for the Technician of the Year (TOY). The awards are open to all those currently studying materials or minerals technology or related subjects and those who have completed such courses within the last two years. There is no age barrier.

One person who has been successful in both the Technician and Royal Charter Prize is Tom Zalewski TIMMM. He says, ‘To have been professionally recognised for both my academic and technical work was incredible. The subsequent opportunities granted in meeting new people, having your work examined and recognised, and getting involved with the Institute, remain fruitful today and will no doubt assist me on the road to chartership. I would implore everyone to look at those around them and nominate them for one of the many awards offered by the Institute, just as others did for me and for which I am very thankful.’

Dr David Egner CEng FIMMM says, ‘In recent years I have had the good fortune to be invited to judge the Royal Charter prize on behalf of the Institute. I truly consider this to be an honour. On every occasion I have met a succession of bright enthusiastic people with phenomenal intellects and a desire to use their newfound knowledge and skills to change the world for the better. The awards provide an opportunity for reflection and celebration of a person’s early career successes and a chance to vocalise their forward ambition.

Scholarships and Bursaries

The Institute awards several scholarships and bursaries in the minerals and mining disciplines. These travel and study bursaries originate from the former IMinE and IMM and have continued to grow in popularity within IOM3.

These awards are considered annually with applications being sought in December each year. Field experience is an essential part of a well-rounded and effective geological education, and interaction with professionals from the mining and mineral exploration industries provides an invaluable opportunity for students to learn and to share ideas. One group of students that the Institute has supported over the years is the Society of Economic Geologist Student Chapter (SEG) at Imperial College London. Back in 2017, they organised a field course to Morocco to gain an understanding of the regional geology and diverse ore forming processes of the country. This was followed by a trip to Namibia in 2018 and a trip to Peru in 2019.

Awards are also available for postgraduate research into metal mining, nonferrous extraction metallurgy or mineral dressing, the teaching and practice of geology applied to mining and to support UK university-based research into extractive metallurgy and mineral processing. There are also awards specifically for the postgraduate
study of minerals and mining by those living in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK who wish to undertake further study in the UK.
