IOM3 Training Academy – supporting professional development

The IOM3 Training Academy has been working hard to develop courses in as many formats as we can, to support our members in their ongoing career journey.

It is difficult to believe that almost half of 2021 has passed already. The last 18 months seem to have disappeared in the blink of an eye, though they have presented unprecedented challenges to us all. Some, like me, have had to juggle full-time work and home-schooling recalcitrant children, others have struggled with redundancy and many have had uncertainty around being furloughed and when they will return to work. However, the one thing the 18 months has allowed us all to do is reflect on our position in the world and perhaps rebalance our priorities.

For those wishing to develop their technical know-how, we have a range of qualifications and short courses in packaging, wood technology, clay technology, and practical roll pass design, which can be studied at a pace to suit you. In addition, new for this year, are courses on Oilfield Metallurgy, Fracture and Fatigue Failure Analysis and Materials Selection
– you can now watch the free introductory webinars on the website to see if the full course is for you. We have been working closely with the Forum on Engineering Structural Integrity (FESI) to develop a series of standalone lectures relating to structural integrity in a variety of sectors, and these are also available to view on-demand on the website.

We know that professional development is not all about technical knowledge and that business skills are also vital to career progression. In addition to our face-to-face Certificate in Management and Lean Six Sigma courses, we have several online offerings that you can study at your own pace. Our standalone session on using LinkedIn as a marketing tool is a great introduction to how this platform can be best utilised to your advantage. You could follow this up with our eight-session Marketing Essentials course that looks at everything from identifying your target audience to developing a website and blogging. You can opt to buy these as individual sessions to meet your specific needs or as a full suite.

Moving forward, we are keen to develop new training opportunities to support the whole IOM3 community. Over the coming months, we will be working with our Technical Communities to highlight existing and future skills gaps so that we can focus effort in these areas.

In the meantime, if you have ideas for training courses that you think we should investigate, or you would like to collaborate with us, please don’t hesitate to get in touch at [email protected]
