IOM3 joins signatories for Professional Bodies Climate Action Charter

IOM3 has become a signatory for the Professional Bodies Climate Action Charter.

The aim of this initiative is to help support members across all professions in addressing the challenge of implementing the Paris Agreement.

IOM3 has already demonstrated a high level of ambition through being a founding signatory of the Pledge to Net Zero and setting a target to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions by 58.9% by 2030 as well as an indicative target for scope 3 emissions.

Signing the Charter builds on this and further demonstrates the commitment of IOM3 to climate action and supporting members to play their role in the transition.

The Charter aims to share expertise across the sector and ensure it reaches members as well as build on discussion to ensure a consistent new common language for all professions on climate change and that guidance and advocacy for members is clear and consistent. This will maximise the impact of existing work and accelerate the transition to net zero.

IOM3 CEO Colin Church FIMMM CEnv, says, ‘IOM3 supports professionals in materials, minerals and mining to be heroes of the transition to a low-carbon, resource-efficient society. I am therefore delighted that IOM3 is signing this Climate Action Charter as a further public statement of intent in this area.’

The Charter outlines three key commitments to:

  1. Chart the path to sustainability for our members including developing Climate Action Plans and sharing resources
  2. Speak with a unified voice to and with professional bodies, government and the public including championing the role of our members and collaborating with other professional bodies across a wide range of sectors
  3. Empower and inspire our members to drive sustainable growth including through CPD and reducing our own emissions

Geraint Northwood, E3G, said, ‘Achieving net zero swiftly and credibly requires cooperation between all actors on the front line of the transition. As a founding member of the Professional Bodies Charter, IOM3 has taken a vital step in leveraging their unique expertise and experience to support professional bodies, large and small, to join in the ambition to create a green and prosperous economy for everyone.'

Other signatories include Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management and the Energy Institute.
