Extended Producer Responsibility scheme for packaging deferred to October 2025

The UK Government has deferred new rules by a year to make packaging producers pay for the cost of recycling.

The government say they have made the decision to delay after 'extensive engagement with industry, and in light of the pressure facing consumers and businesses in the current economic context'.

They will reportedly use the time to continue discussions with industry around the design of the scheme and how to reduce costs where possible. They claim that producers have already started to use less packaging, as well as formats that are easier-to-recycle in anticipation of EPR.

Environment Minister Rebecca Pow says, 'We’re determined to transform the way we collect, recycle and reuse our waste materials, so we eliminate all avoidable waste by 2050 in a way that works for households and consumers. That’s better for our environment.'
