Companies combine to develop smartphone Near-Infrared spectrometer integration

trinamiX and VIAVI solutions sign joint development agreement to create technology.

trinamiX and VIAVI Solutions have joined forces to build a Near-Infrared (NIR) spectrometer module for integration into consumer devices, including smartphones.

trinamiX, a start-up founded by BASF in 2015 based in the USA, oversee miniaturisation of NIR spectrometer modules for smartphones, while VIAVI, also in the USA, create optical filters and currently operate in the consumer electronics market.

It follows trinamaX’s announcement in December 2020 at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Tech Summit, that it plans to bring NIR spectroscopy into consumer devices.

Dr. Wilfried Hermes, Director of Infrared Sensing at trinamiX, says, 'We are very excited about VIAVI joining us as a strong partner, whose state-of-the-art optical solutions have been constantly pushing the envelope on what is technically possible within mobile handsets and other consumer electronics.'

Commenting on the collaboration, Markus Bilger, Senior Director, Product Line Management at VIAVI, explains, 'trinamiX has broken new ground by introducing plans to bring spectroscopy to everyone. We are incredibly proud to be working with trinamiX on the next game-changing innovation that will redefine our understanding of a smartphone.'
