Calls to report fraud in plastic recycling reporting
The British Plastics Federation (BPF) say some companies exaggerate recycled content for monetary or marketing gain.

The BPF feel a system must be agreed on a national and international level to ensure a level playing field for companies striving to incorporate recycled plastic content. This is echoed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in their latest report.
The BPF are aware of companies that claim to have been put out of business as a result of plastic packaging tax fraud.
Reporting on any fraud companies encounter regarding plastic recycled content will counter this as well as raise the profile of plastic recycling fraud among parliament, claim the BPF.
They also call for investment in UK recycling infrastructure to make material easier to trace.
The OECD released their annual report on Monitoring trade in plastic waste and scrap 2025, which found global plastic trade waste continued to decline between 2022 and 2023. The report also found that some countries continue to export to non-OECD countries, making their environmental credentials difficult to trace.
The OECD's Policy scenrios for eliminating plastic pollution by 2040 claims comprehensive global policies to address the entire plastics lifecycle can reduce plastic leakage into the environment by 96% by 2040.
