British Airways (BA) has received its first delivery of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Philips 66 Limited, after signing a multi-year agreement with them.

The SAF bought by BA will reduce lifecycle CO2 emissions by almost 100k tonnes, enough for 700 net-zero London to New York flights on a Boeing 787.

The fuel comes from sustainable waste feedstock and BA will add it to its existing pipeline infrastructure for several UK airports, including London Heathrow.

SAF is produced from waste gases, crop and forestry residues, household and commercial waste, and used cooking oil. It can reduce lifecycle CO2 emissions by more than 80% compared to jet fuel.

BA's owner, International Airlines Group, is investing $400 million over the next 20 years into SAF development.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps says, 'It's great to see British Airways is the first airline in the world that started using sustainable aviation fuel produced at scale in the UK - an important milestone towards our ambitious Jet Zero targets.'
