Robert Purgert

Robert Purgert

President, The Energy Industries of Ohio

Robert Purgert, President of Energy Industries of Ohio, is a native Ohioan who began his career at Wright Patterson Air Force Base overseeing contracts for the U.S. Air Force Materials Laboratory.  He subsequently joined NASA-Glenn Research Center as Chief of the Procurement Operations Branch, later returning to the private sector where he worked at a number of defense contractors.  These included Cleveland Pneumatic Landing Gear, Physics International Co., and Thompson Casting Company.  As Vice President at Thompson Casting he was responsible for developing a new advanced squeeze casting process for Metal Matrix Composites (MMC's) in conjunction with Oak Ridge National Laboratory.  The process called "Metal Compression Forming" was named one of R&D Magazines “Top 100” new technologies.  He is a recipient of Ohio’s Emerging Technology Award.  He holds a patent for lightweight metallic foams and has published a number of technical articles.  Mr. Purgert’s other experiences include testifying before Congress and serving as Trustee or Board Member of organizations such as the Ohio Cast Metals Association and Ohio’s Edison Materials Technology Center.  He was the driving force for creating The Energy Industries of Ohio (EIO) instituted to aid Ohio’s basic energy intensive industries such as steel making, metal casting, aluminum and glass production for energy efficiency along with baseload energy generation needed to power these industries.  His organization formed the State of Ohio’s Center for Industrial Energy Efficiency to address a key need for maintaining competitiveness and a robust supply chain of these basic industries.  EIO provides program management for consortiums of stake holders or conducts its own research and technology development.  These programs include development of advanced materials and manufacturing processes for next generation nuclear and fossil based systems.

Horst Hack

Horst Hack

Technical Executive - Bulk Energy Storage, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)

Horst Hack is a Technical Executive in the Generation Sector at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).

He is current leading a multi-year government-funded project on gasification of coal and biomass for net-negative power and hydrogen production, with $11.7 million in scope. Mr. Hack is the principal investigator on crushed-rock thermal energy storage project, aiming to demonstrate the technology at pilot scale. He has also been responsible for technical project management on the Advanced Ultrasupercritical (A-USC) Component Test (ComTest) Project, including $27 million in scope. His other project responsibilities include supporting oxy-combustion process development, to enable carbon capture and storage (CCS). He also contributes to EPRI’s Low Carbon Resources Initiative (LCRI) with a hydrogen creation roadmap effort.

Prior to joining EPRI, Hack worked for Foster Wheeler North America Corporation for over 20 years, where he served as Director of Research and Development. In this role, he was responsible for managing a diverse portfolio of R&D projects, including pilot plant testing of PC and CFB combustion and gasification systems; demonstration of oxy-fuel combustion for carbon capture on PC and CFB units; design and testing of multi-pollutant absorber systems with integrated mercury removal; testing of high-temperature materials for advanced ultra-supercritical boilers; HRSG optimization for cycling; design of molten salt solar receiver technology; and engineering software development. His background encompasses fossil (coal, oil, gas), nuclear, and renewable (biomass, solar) technologies.

Hack holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, both from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York, New York.

Mike Spindler

Mike Spindler

Materials Engineer, EDF Energy

Mike is an industrial materials engineer working in Nuclear Power Generation. The UK operates the world’s only fleet of commercial high temperature nuclear power stations (14 reactors at 7 power stations). These stations are CO2 gas cooled and have primary coolant outlet temperatures of around 650°C with the boilers operating at up to 540°C. Therefore he specialises in the high temperature mechanical properties of steels and methods for assessing the remaining life of power plant components.
