What to expect
There is an increasing wave of activity around Abandoned and Derelict Vessels (ADV) and specifically glass-fibre reinforced polyester (GRP) hulls disfiguring the coastline and estuaries. The community ranges from the boat manufacturers, through waste handling facilities, to marina operators and the environmental lobby.
As most vessel hulls are GRP composites, they are difficult to handle at the top of the circular economy/waste hierarchy. Those ADV that are dealt with typically go to cement kilns or processes that break down the materials to the chemical building blocks.
The meeting would brainstorm solutions to deal with the unwanted boats and seek to minimise the impact of such vessels on the composites sector.

- John's research focuses on manufacturing, sustainability, and materials characterisation.
- He has been involved in various industries, including Derwent Publications, Western Approach (Consultants) Limited, and the Ministry of Defence (Navy).
- John is also a founding member of the Advanced Composites Manufacturing Centre and leads the Materials and Structures (MAST) Research Group. His work contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting sustainability and reducing environmental impact.
