NMG Lunchtime Seminar Series: Focus on Clothing

NMG Focus on Clothing

You are invited to join us for our monthly virtual event, where the focus will be on Clothing

You will hear from

Zoe Gilbertson

LIFLAD CIC

Bioregional Resilience through Bast Fibres

  • Zoe is our Founding Director, an ecological designer. Management roles in fashion, program direction, and enterprise innovation have enabled Zoe to layer highly developed values of care with pragmatic realism to radically rethink how we operate.
  • Zoe loves raising seedlings, growing flax and making things.

Jane Wood

University of Manchester

Natural by Origin, Sustainable by Design: Rethinking Natural Materials in Clothing

  • Dr Jane Wood is a textile scientist and technologist with more than 18 years of international industry experience. She is a Lecturer at the University of Manchester and Founder and Director of the Sustainable Textiles and Apparel Research Group (STAR).
  • Her research examines how textile materials, chemicals and manufacturing processes influence performance, durability, pollution and circularity. She has particular expertise in sustainable textile systems, colouration, microfibre pollution and bio-based materials, including the development and evaluation of bacterial cellulose for textile applications. Jane brings an applied textile-technologist’s perspective to sustainability: looking beyond where a material comes from to consider how it is processed, whether it performs in use, how long it lasts and what realistically happens at the end of its life.
  • She is a Fellow of IOM3 and The Textile Institute, and a Trustee of both The Textile Institute and the Society of Dyers and Colourists.

Mohammad Mahbubul Hassan

University of the Arts London

Trends in sustainable fibre research for future clothing

  • Prof. Mohammad Mahbubul Hassan is a textile/chemical engineer with expertise in textile chemical process engineering, polymer processing, and effluent treatment. He has more than 26 years of academic and industrial research experience in sustainable textile and polymeric materials development, closed-loop textile process development, recycling and reuse of spent- dyebath, zero-effluent dyeing and finishing, dyeing and finishing of textiles under subcritical and supercritical media, synthesis of polymeric dyes and textile finishing agents, synthesis of metallic and polymeric nanoparticles for textile applications, wearable textiles, wound dressings, medical textiles, sustainable multifunctional textile development, polymer bio-composites and nanocomposites, polymer rheology, polymeric ceramics, carbon fiber from renewable resources, catalytic ozonation, sustainable leather processing, and sustainable footwear production.
  • He had a BSc in textile technology, majoring in textile and polymer chemistry from the University of Dhaka, and then completed his PhD in Textile Technology/Chemical Engineering in 1999 at the University of Manchester under a British Commonwealth scholarship. Before joining the Fashion, Textiles and Technology Institute (UAL), he worked as a senior scientist in the Bioproduct and Fiber Technology Team of New Zealand Institute for Bioeconomy Science for 18 years and as an assistant professor in Polymer Science and Engineering at Yamagata University for two years. He was an associate editor of RSC Advances (published by the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK) from 2015 to 2025.
