We are thrilled to launch this new course focussing on how environmental, social and governance (ESG) should be an integral part of any Mineral Project evaluation, in partnership with Fiona Cessford from SRK Consulting.

Mineral reporting codes, investor expectations and supply chain demands are changing how companies assess and disclose material ESG factors.  Recognising that geoscience organisations now require a level of ESG understanding as part of ethical guidelines, and that good practice is constantly evolving and can feel overwhelming, this course aims to demystify the concepts and help show that incorporation of ESG need not be a major effort.

The course will be delivered over 4 sessions;

Session 1

Defining ESG and the reasons behind the paradigm shift. We will dig into the main topics covered by ESG in the context of mining and mineral projects.  We will discuss why ESG has become a hot topic – what are the drivers. We will touch on the world of ESG standards and initiatives. This will include a discussion on what standards are relevant in various contexts.

Session 2

Decarbonisation and climate change imperative: Firstly, we will look at the overarching imperative around decarbonisation in the mining industry. Building on this, we will discuss various actions mining companies are implementing to reduce their carbon footprints.  Lastly, we will touch on the process of climate adaptation, including predicting how climate change affects projects, assessing climate related risks and the building of climate resilience in both new projects and existing operations.

Session 3

Decarbonisation and climate change imperative: Firstly, we will look at the overarching imperative around decarbonisation in the mining industry. Building on this, we will discuss various actions mining companies are implementing to reduce their carbon footprints.  Lastly, we will touch on the process of climate adaptation, including predicting how climate change affects projects, assessing climate related risks and the building of climate resilience in both new projects and existing operations.

Session 4

Practical exercise.  Using an imaginary development project, we will break into teams to explore what the likely ESG challenges are for the project and how these should be addressed as the project develops.

This course is relevant to geoscientists and engineers in the exploration and mining industry.
