World Bank green-lights mining data project in Peru
The US$200mln project seeks to help Peru's mining sector become more competitive, transparent and sustainable.
The World Bank claims the project will contribute to unlocking the economic potential of the country’s mineral wealth by generating cutting-edge geoscientific data, modernising the permitting system and strengthening institutional capacity.
Mining accounts for ~10% of Peru's GDP, according to the World Bank, with exports totalling US$61.849bln in 2025. However, it reports that investment has slowed in recent years due to regulatory bottlenecks, permit delays and governance challenges.
'Creating more and better jobs is at the heart of Peru’s development challenge, particularly for young people and communities in mining regions,' said Issam Abousleiman, World Bank Country Director for Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru.
The project will reportedly modernise Peru’s geoscientific capabilities by producing and disseminating 'cutting‑edge' data, supported by the creation of a National Drill Core Library and a 'state‑of‑the‑art' geochronology laboratory.
The initiative is also aiming to advance the development of a Digital One‑Stop permitting platform to streamline authorisations, reduce bottlenecks, strengthen regulatory clarity and enhance transparency.
