The UK will become the first European country to launch a high-assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU) plant, says the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).

DESNZ says that the investment will end Russia's dominance as the only commercial producer of HALEU.

The investment is intended to help deliver up to 24GW of nuclear power by 2050, a quarter of the UK's electricity needs.

Most advanced reactors require HALEU and an additional £10mln will also be available to develop skills and sites to produce other advanced nuclear fuels in the UK.
