The partnership will cover supply of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) for more than half of Airbus' needs in Europe, and a research programme to develop 100% SAFs for current and future aircraft.

According to the companies, SAFs will reduce up to 90% of CO2 emissions over their lifecycle compared to the fossil-fuel equivalent.

How the composition of SAFs impacts the reduction of CO2 emissions, as well as non-CO2 effects such as contrails, will also be studied.

TotalEnergies says it has already been supplying the SAF used by Airbus for aircraft deliveries in Toulouse since 2016, and several first SAF flights with Airbus aircraft.

Airbus says the development is in line with the objective of achieving net-carbon neutrality of aviation by 2050.
