The association says this is a first of its kind for the tin industry and provides insights into the environmental impact of refined tin production. The members who participated in the study produce around 55% of globally refined tin, including both primary and secondary metal.

The life cycle assessment was undertaken by consultancy Sphera Solutions and included impacts of mining - as well as artisanal and small scale production, recycled material, mineral processing or beneficiation, smelting and refining.

ITA Head of Sustainability Kay Nimmo says, 'This new LCA study provides an updated understanding of average industry impacts and provides aggregated tin industry sustainability performance  data which is increasingly sought after by tin stakeholders and users.'
