Old clothes used to fix potholes
Waste textiles are being used to repair five potholes in the UK town of Maidstone.
The material from RECOOL fills most of the pothole, with a special surface layer placed on top.
The repairs will be monitored and future use will depend on the pothole’s performance over the coming months.
According to the NGO WRAP, the UK generates around 1.45Mt of used textiles every year, with almost half ending up in general waste.
‘This pilot is about turning that problem into an opportunity,’ says Councillor Rachel Rodwell, Cabinet Member for Climate Transition and Nature Recovery. ‘By testing whether waste textiles can be repurposed as part of a pothole repair material, we're exploring a practical solution that could reduce waste, cut carbon emissions and support the circular economy.’
The trial is a collaboration between Maidstone Borough Council and RECOOL, who are in partnership with contractor Loughman.
