The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), in particular its Mining Technology Group (MTG), and IOM3-affiliated local societies extend their sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dr Geoffrey Walton CEng FIMMM, who sadly passed away on Tuesday, 25 February 2025.

Known as 'Geoff' to his acquaintances, he spent his early career as a geotechnical engineer for the NCB Opencast Executive and on secondment to the Rock Mechanics Research Group at the Royal School of Mines, London. Geoff went on to establish the Geoffrey Walton Practice (GWP) in 1973, known today as GWP Consultants LLP. Under his leadership, the government-commissioned and seminal 'Technical Review of the Stability and Hydrogeology of Mineral Workings' was prepared by GWP in association with the Department of Mining Engineering, Nottingham University, and was reviewed by Geoff and Dr Roy Taylor of Durham University before its publication in 1988. The detailed report was accompanied by an abridged handbook produced by GWP, which Geoff edited and also drafted the rock slope design guidelines. A sequel to the design of tips and related structures was published in 1991. Geoff was also instrumental in revising the Quarries Regulations (1999) before implementation so that they became a workable document.

Geoff obtained his PhD in mining engineering from Nottingham University and was a visiting Professor of Mining at Leeds University for twenty years beginning in 1995. While there, he diversified into dimension stones and, in 2004, established the directional dust monitoring firm currently trading as DustScanAQ. In 2007, he set up Professor Geoffrey Walton & Associates, PGW&A LLP, where he was a director until 2013. He remained with DustScan until retirement from his role as Chairman in 2021. Still not done in the later years of his life, when he spent more time on his beloved family and garden, Geoff created Down Stone Books and, again in 2021, authored and published 'The Early History of an Applied Geoscience Consultancy: Setting up GWP'.

An IOM3 member since 1970, Fellow and Chartered Engineer, Geoff wrote numerous articles and publications on mine and quarry design and geotechnics, including co-authored papers on coastal superquarry development and landform simulation in the 'IMM Transactions: Section A', now known as 'Mining Technology'.

Geoff continually forged links between academia, professional bodies and industry. None more so than when he was an author, presenter, editor, committee member and director of Extractive Industry Geology (EIG) Conferences, where he chaired the 2004 conference at Leeds University. In 2008, Geoff underwent major heart surgery after being taken critically ill at the Cardiff conference. However, in his own indomitable style, he recovered and led the transition of EIG into a company limited by guarantee. This was a very significant move as the biennial conferences had been supported and organised by IOM3 (as IMM pre-2002 merger) and the Geological Society of London, before EIG became fully independent after the turn of the millennium. In 2010, Geoff delivered the prestigious Ansel Dunham Lecture at EIG Portsmouth and received an award for distinguished professional services to the extractive industries.

Those who knew Geoff will remember a true entrepreneur with rigorous standards, in both academic and professional terms, and an irrepressible character unafraid to speak his mind. He gave many professionals their first or new starts in their careers and mentored several in the following years.

His funeral service and gathering of his family, friends and colleagues took place in his adopted hometown of Charlbury, Oxfordshire, on 16 April. The Chair of the MTG and other IOM3 members were in attendance.

IOM3 and the MTG express their sincere gratitude to his family for their approval of the content of this obituary and for their kind permission to publish it in memory of Geoff, whose influence will not be forgotten.
