IOM3 appoints new Chair of Local Affairs Committee

IOM3 is pleased to announce that Sam Gnaniah has been appointed as the new Chair of the Local Affairs Committee

Sam has been actively involved with IOM3 since 2001, initially developing the Composites Division (now Composites Group) website. In 2016, he successfully attained his Chartered Engineer (CEng) designation and was elevated to Fellow status within the Institute in 2018.

Since 2019, Sam has represented the IOM3 Advisory Council as the southeast regional representative. During the start of the pandemic, he played a pivotal role in initiating the Southern Counties Materials Minerals and Mining Society (SCMMMS) covering a wider catchment than its predecessor, West Surrey Materials Society. SCMMMS continues to collaborate with other local societies (CAMS and MinSouth) delivering a series of highly regarded CPD approved lectures on materials, minerals and mining, reaching audiences both within the UK and internationally. The Young Persons' Lecture Competition is another activity that has a significant impact on the younger membership.

In his professional capacity, Sam brings over three decades of expertise to his role in material characterisation through thermal analysis. Since joining NPL in 1997, he has spearheaded thermal analysis research, providing support to a diverse range of industry sectors. Demonstrating his commitment to international standards, he currently chairs the VAMAS Technical Work Area (TWA) on Thermal Properties and has served as the International Secretary for the VAMAS G16 network for three terms since 2008.

Sam commented on the appointment saying, ‘I am delighted to be appointed as Chair of the Local Affairs Committee, covering the activities of the 29 Affiliated Local Societies (ALS) within the UK regions and overseas. Building on the strong foundation laid by Dave Evetts, the outgoing Chair, I aim to widen its reach even further. ALS are an inclusive and accessible platform for both IOM3 members and the wider materials science community to keep researchers at the forefront of cutting-edge materials science research and foster collaboration among experts. It is a gateway for researchers of all levels to connect with IOM3 and advance their professional careers’.
