Today, the government announcement that it will lift the moratorium on fracking in England. Reactions to the announcement have been mixed.

Writing on Twitter, Caroline Lucas, Green Party MP for Brighton Pavilion described the move as a disaster for climate change and pointed to a ‘huge U-turn for new Chancellor Kwarteng who, 6 months ago, said “those who call for return (of fracking) misunderstand the situation: no amount of shale gas from 100s of wells across England would be enough to lower European price any time soon”. ‘

Others feel that the potential benefits of fracking are too large to ignore as the UK faces huge energy issues.

The government will also make more than 100 new licences for oil and gas extraction in the North Sea available over coming months.
