Chartered Environmentalists strive towards a better future

To mark World Environment Day we’re spotlighting our three most recent members who have been awarded the status of Chartered Environmentalist and sharing their experiences across a range of sectors.

The transition to a low-carbon economy is underway and accelerating globally. IOM3 and its members have a vital role to play in getting there.

Thomas South CEnv MIMMM - Packaging

Q: Can you tell us about your background?

A: I’ve worked at QVC now for 17 years, 12 of those as QVC UK’s Packaging Engineer. I work on national and international packaging projects with colleagues in Germany, Italy, USA and Japan. We look at everything from current and new packaging products, packaging supply chain, packaging innovation and sustainability to CO₂ reduction.

Q: How did you find the Chartered Environmentalist process?

A: The whole process of registering was very straightforward thanks to the Institute. The initial course to register was in depth, informative and engaging. I had great support when writing my paper and the interview process was a great platform for me to demonstrate my knowledge, experience, and passion of environmental issues in the packaging industry.

Q: Now you are chartered, what are your professional/academic plans?

A: I would love to be able to educate others on what more can be done and to make recycling, upcycling and reusing second nature. I want to be able to influence change in the UK recycling process, so that it is clear and easy for everyone. I am looking to attend as many courses/seminars as I can to improve my knowledge and understanding of materials, global recycling policies and processes.

Dr Fragkoulis Kanavaris CEng CEnv CSci MIMMM - Construction Materials

Q: What events lead you to decide you wanted to register as a Chartered Environmentalist?

A: As concrete is responsible for approximately 8% of global anthropogenic CO₂ emissions, I strive for reducing its carbon footprint through different avenues and adopting environmentally friendly concrete practices with minimised social and environmental impacts. I wanted to register as a Chartered Environmentalist for my work on environmentally friendly concrete practices to be recognised.

Q: What was your main motivation to register as a Chartered Environmentalist?

A: I wanted to raise awareness that Chartered Environmentalists are multidimensional and their work is relevant to several disciplines. Personally, I was the first cement and concrete expert to be registered as CEnv with IOM3 alongside CEng (Chartered Engineer) and CSci (Chartered Scientist).

Q: Now you are chartered, what are your professional/academic plans?

A: As a Chartered Environmentalist I have established my credibility regarding the environmental and social aspects of the work I am leading under my discipline. I plan to carry on working in the field and strive to enhance design practices towards environmentally friendly solutions.

Phil Broughton CEnv MIMMM - Mining

Q: Can you tell us about your background?

A: I joined the Coal Authority in 2003 working within the Mining Records department. Between 2007-2010 I attended Leeds University graduating with a degree in Mining Engineering. I have been fortunate enough to work in a variety of teams across the Coal Authority and now I work within the Mining Information team as the Acting Technical Team Leader.

Q: What lead you to decide you wanted to register as a Chartered Environmentalist?

A: I have always been passionate about the environment and creating a better future for people. Since graduating my intention was to work towards obtaining chartered status with my priority initially being to gain further experience within my roles at the Coal Authority. I thoroughly enjoy what I do and feel this status reflects the hard work, experience and energy I bring to the job each day.

Q: Now you are chartered, what are your professional/academic plans?

A: I intend to further my professional development, undertaking additional courses to develop myself professionally, broadening my experience and skillset. I have an interest in continuing my development with IOM3, potentially progressing an application for dual registration, applying for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
