Alternative Shaft Access at a North Wales Shaft site
Add to calWilliam Smith Building, Keele University and via zoom
We are pleased to announce our first technical event for 2023. The lecture, on 06 February, will be delivered by David Greenwell and Alun Jenkins of SES Ltd, and will consider 'Alternative mineshaft access'.
The Milwr tunnel is a mine water drainage tunnel based near to Halkyn in North Wales. The tunnel was driven to de-water the lead mine workings of the various mines operating in the Halkyn Mountain. When mining operations were abandonedm the responsibility for the upkeep of the tunnel passed to Welsh Water, who employed United Utilities to look after the general maintenance of the tunnel and associated infrastructure. SES Ltd had been involved in conducting these maintenance works for several years; they had reopened and accessed the Milwr Tunnel via the adjoining mineshafts on two previous occasions. David and Alun's presentation will highlight the second re-entry at one of these mineshafts and the novel approach taken to providing a quick and safe access to the mineshaft, its inspection and the inspection of the Milwr Tunnel itself.
This lecture will take place in the William Smith Building on Keele University's Keele Campus; it will start at 1900 and a light buffet supper will be served afterwards to which everyone is welcome.
The lecture will also be available to join via Zoom.
