Corrosion in Nuclear Environments, Materials and where to find them.

Add to cal

University of Bristol Faculty of Engineering Bristol, England

Talk by invited speaker RNDr. Mariia Zimina, Ph.D. Senior research associate at the University of Bristol.

The UK is approaching a transition from its current advanced gas reactor (AGR) fleet to light water reactors (LWR) with the government has committed to build Hinkley Point C (HPC) and Sizewell C (SZC) nuclear reactors. At the same time, nuclear fusion continues to develop towards a power-generating reactor, with ITER currently under construction in France and planning underway for the demonstration fusion plant DEMO and the UK spherical tokamak for energy production (STEP). The change from CO2-cooled designs to water-cooled reactors in the UK presents both challenge and opportunity for the scientific research community. Whilst there is still a great of deal of research into extending the lifetimes of the current AGRs, in the future the behaviour of reactor components in water environments will become increasingly important. This talk will explore the crucial points in nuclear corrosion science for LWRs and fusion reactors, as well as discuss the importance of the synergy between industrial research and academic studies.
